SOUTHWEST OREGON
For
much of the past century the rich and famous,
the sportsmen, filmmakers and artists flocked
to Southwest Oregon. They came for the abundant
resources, the tranquility and the seclusion,
and for the spectacular natural beauty. The
same treasures still await you today. Southwest
Oregon is still home to some of the finest natural
resources and majestic natural beauty found
anywhere.
The
ancient forests are carpeted with ferns and
host a greater variety of wildlife than nearly
anywhere else in North America. Black tail deer,
Roosevelt elk, cougar, bobcats and black bear
inhabit our forests. Eagles, hawks, falcon,
ducks, geese, wild turkey and hundreds of other
bird species are found here too.
Playful otters and harbor seals are often seen
seeking their share of the 40 to 50 pound salmon
that fill the rivers, and on at least one occasion,
an Orca whale was spotted a mile up the Rogue
River.
Many
different gourmet mushrooms grow in the forests
here, including porcini, morel, chanterelle,
truffles, and a dozen more. Wild mushrooms and
berries from the forest, salmon from the rivers
and fresh crab from the sea are guaranteed to
delight your palate.
A wide range of dining is available in the area
including Tu Tu Tun Lodge on the Rogue River,
currently rated the 6th finest lodge/restaurant
in North America.
Ancient
carvings in stone (Petroglyphs) found on the
Rogue River and elsewhere attest to the 20,000
year history of Native Americans in the area.
As testament to a more recent historical event,
a small sign on Mt. Emily, outside of Brookings,
marks the spot where Japanese bombs landed in
WWII.
Kayaking,
canoeing, float trips and white water rafting
are just as popular as fishing on the rivers.
Jet boat rides are available from Gold Beach.
Passengers ride in 1200 horsepower boats that
skim across the surface and slide through the
corners. Be prepared to get wet, see a lot of
wildlife, and have a lot of fun.
The
Pacific coastline is rich in resources and stunningly
beautiful. It hosts a healthy and abundant sport
fish population. Windsurfing, kayaking, whale
watching, beach combing and sunset walks on
the beach or coastal trails are always popular
activities. Craggy rocks, natural arches and
sea stacks make ours one of the most picturesque
and most photographed coastlines anywhere in
North America.
There
is so much that awaits you here. Take your time
and savor it all. It is truly "Life as it should
be". |
